Google is doubling down on personalized AI — and this time, it’s coming to Search.
The company announced Wednesday that Personal Intelligence, its opt-in personalization framework for Gemini, is now expanding to AI Mode in Google Search. The update allows eligible users to connect Gmail and Google Photos directly to Search, enabling AI-powered responses that factor in personal context alongside real-time web results.
The rollout follows Google’s recent launch of Personal Intelligence for Gemini, where the assistant gained the ability to securely reason across connected apps like Gmail, Photos, YouTube, and Search. At the time, Google framed the goal succinctly: the best AI assistants shouldn’t just understand the world — they should understand you.
With this latest expansion, that philosophy is now being applied directly to how users search.
AI Mode is Google’s experimental search experience designed to handle longer, multi-part questions and conversational follow-ups — a direct response to tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search and Perplexity AI. By layering Personal Intelligence into AI Mode, Google is pushing Search beyond keywords and links toward a system that adapts to individual users.
Once enabled, AI Mode can reference personal signals such as travel confirmations in Gmail or past trips stored in Photos to generate tailored recommendations. Searching for weekend plans, for example, could surface family-friendly activities based on previous vacations. Shopping queries might factor in brands a user already prefers or upcoming travel destinations pulled from email receipts.
Google says early testing shows users are asking queries that are roughly twice as long as traditional searches and following up far more frequently — behavior that suggests users are treating Search less like a lookup tool and more like a conversational assistant.
As with Gemini’s earlier rollout, Google emphasized that Personal Intelligence in Search is opt-in, off by default, and fully user-controlled. Users choose which apps to connect and can disconnect them at any time.
AI Mode runs on Gemini and does not train directly on Gmail inboxes or Photos libraries. Personal data is referenced only to fulfill specific requests, while model training relies on filtered and obfuscated interaction data. When possible, Gemini attempts to explain where information came from, giving users a way to verify or correct responses — an important safeguard as AI becomes more personalized.
The feature is launching as a Labs experiment for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S., with plans to expand access over time. It’s currently limited to personal Google accounts and excludes Workspace, enterprise, and education users.
From a platform perspective, the move highlights a broader shift underway across the AI landscape. Personal Intelligence positions Gemini — and now Search — as a contextual operating layer, not just a standalone tool.
